Why Custom Wrought Iron?

Renaldo Ratto at work

The most beautiful ironwork is forged. In the hands of a competent blacksmith, iron can be hammered, twisted, pulled, shaped, and wrought into sinuous, lyrical shapes evoking natural forms such as flowing water, tree branches, vines, or even smoke - the sky is the limit. In a piece of wrought iron, the craftsman marries shape to function with sublety or in a grand ornate fashion. The finest pieces have no visible welds, and connections are made with rivets, collars, or forged welds. A wide variety of patinas can be used to enhance the beauty, bringing out textures and highlights. A custom piece is one of a kind, a special heirloom, made to last a lifetime - often outlasting the building they were made for. It is in this tradition that we approach each and every commision.
